All you need to know
Whether you’re dreaming of a balmy summer holiday setting sail on Poole’s buzzing waters, or a wintery weekend away strolling Sandbanks’ empty sands, holidays in East Dorset have so much to offer.
Breathtaking coastal views, soft white sandy beaches, seriously good food and watersports galore, holidays in East Dorset are truly hard to beat. Stretching from the sea stacks and fossil-filled shores of the Isle of Purbeck to the bustling beaches of Bournemouth, this corner of the county is filled with contrasts. You’ll find ancient castles and Jurassic cliff faces, plus contemporary beach bars, exclusive events and maybe even some famous faces. Holidays in East Dorset are perfect for those happiest by the water.
Whether you base yourself on Sandbanks, the Isle of Purbeck or prefer the bustle of Poole or Bournemouth, you’ll have the famous waters of Poole Harbour on your doorstep. The largest natural harbour in Europe, it’s loved by seasoned sailors, with yacht clubs, marinas and chandlers lining the shore, but is also great for sunset stand up paddles, kayak adventures or heart-thumping boat trips.
If you haven’t found your sea legs, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on dry land. There are miles of beautiful beaches in East Dorset. Head to the iconic clam-shaped Lulworth Cove for an obligatory photo, or opt for the unspoiled sand dunes of Studland Bay. And a day spent lazing on Sandbanks Beach is bound to be the highlight of your holiday in East Dorset - one of the most famous strips of sand in the UK!
For sightseeing, tick off Durdle Door, Old Harry Rocks and Corfe Castle - all must-dos on your Dorset bucket list. Nature lovers shouldn’t skip a trip to Brownsea Island. The largest of the islands in Poole Harbour and only accessible by ferry, the island is managed by the National Trust and is famed for its resident red squirrels. Plus the stunning woodland trails, flower-filled heaths and free-roaming ponies, donkey and cattle of the majestic New Forest National Park are only a short drive away and well worth exploring on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Speaking of horses, if you time your holiday in East Dorset for the summer months, you’ll be treated to the exclusive annual Sandpolo event on Sandbanks beach. The British Beach Polo Championships sees beach parties, good food and a glamorous atmosphere, plus the polo too, of course.
For your culture fix, wander around Poole’s Old Town and historic quayside, picturing the sea captains and pirates of time gone by. You’ll also find a myriad of market stalls, independent shops, high street names, shopping centres and all-weather attractions in both Poole and Bournemouth. And to fuel all of these adventures, you’ll be spoilt with places to eat and drink in East Dorset. Pick up morning pastries from the many independent local bakeries, enjoy relaxed lunches in beachside cafes and spend the evening in the outstanding bistros and restaurants. Being so close to the water, seafood fills many menus - head to Shell Bay, Rick Stein’s Sandbanks restaurant or The Pig on the Beach.

Brownsea is the largest of Poole Harbour’s islands and creates a unique haven for wildlife including the red squirrel and a wide variety of birds. Catch the ferry from Sandbanks or Poole Quay for the perfect day’s adventure. The island is closed for some of the winter months so check the website below before you visit.

We loved our trip to Brownsea - well organised by the boat company and the NT. Lovely little cafe, some great walks and ability to get to the waters edge. Fabulous.
October 2021
Amazinhg place to visit at any time of year. Our recent visit in September meant we easily spotted the red squirrels as they were actively cashing their nuts for winter! You will also see peacocks and many types of birdlife in the trees and on the heathlands. In fact we saw more wildlife outside the nature reserve which we also visited on the island for an additional 2 quid donation. The cafe serves good basic snacks and has a lovely outside seating area overlooking the harbour. Come early on the first ferry to avoid the crowds - travel from Poole Quay and use the multi-storey carpark which is at quay side. Use the National Trust website to see local opening times and COVID restrictions - we used this to pre-book the ferry - we then simply had to show our membership card on landing to enter the island. Love visiting this island. - it is worth the NT membership!

We booked a birthday meal during our stay in Sandbanks but sadly they cancelled 24 hours beforehand due to a special event which was very disappointing. We did however manage to get into Rockfish on Poole Quay which was lovely.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch at Rick Stein's in a lovely setting with sea views. I am coeliac so requested a gluten free menu which was provided with no fuss. When the freshly baked bread arrived before the meal I was surprised and pleased to receive some GF bread and butter and the 3 course meal was very good for me and my companions. We've been to Rick Stein's restaurants in Padstow and the food in Sandbanks was equally as good.
May 2019
Had a wonderful evening with good service and of course excellent food - would we return - you bet. The views from the restaurant were idyllic and added to our enjoyment - thank you.

Great good and service, well worth a visit.
November 2023
Wonderful food and atmosphere.
September 2023
Never had a bad experience here. Staff always friendly and efficient and the food tastes very fresh and full of flavour. The place has nice vibe to it. The evening closing time is later than some other restaurants too; 10.30pm on a Saturday night. If you have the energy to walk up Evening Hill from Sandbanks, harbourside, to get here, you'll get great views especially at sunset.
July 2023
Great friendly restaurant, delicious food, good value
July 2022
What an excellent restaurant. The service was wonderful and the food was amazing. Well worth a visit.
June 2022
Food was good but service was very very slow and not up to standard. We had our meals served the other way round, our main courses arrived first, them followed by the starters and the cocktails turned up last!!!
October 2021
A seriously good thai restaurant - a good 'modern' vibe, great music, excellent cocktails, made properly, a good menu with a good range of food and excellent staff.
October 2021
Highly recommended. The food was absolutely delicious. Service was done with a smile but it was a little slow on the evening we visited. The side dishes to share were well worth trying. A very nice clean venue.

In an idyllic, beachside location Shell Bay Seafood is widely acclaimed both locally and in the national press. With a huge al-fresco terrace overlooking Studland Bay and a bright, sunny interior this is the place to go for a laid back yet delicious meal with family or friends. As the name suggests fish and seafood play a leading role on the menu although there are equally appetising meat and vegetarian options on offer here too, all cooked to perfection and served by the friendly front of house team. Open high season only, booking essential.

Loved this restaurant. Definitely worth a visit as food was great and lovely views too. A perfect place to watch the sunset! The short ferry ride was good fun but do bring a torch as the short walk from the ferry to the restaurant has no street lights at night!

Set on a small peninsula, just a stone's throw from some of the most expensive and exclusive homes in the country, the world-renowned Sandbanks beach is one of the most beautiful and clean beaches on the South Coast of England.
This spacious, family-friendly beach is blessed with soft golden sand, crystal clear waters and breathtaking views of across the English Channel; and has earned the coveted Blue Flag status for 30 consecutive years.
Beach facilities include a crazy golf course, children's play area, barbecue area, toilets and a cafe.
There is a designated area for dogs at the western end of Sandbanks beach (near the chain ferry). Dog owners are requested to always keep dogs on a lead on the promenade.

Shell Bay beach is an unspoilt sandy beach, backed by dunes and heathland which gives it a beautifully wild feel. With spectacular views across the bay to nearby Bournemouth, it also provides a good vantage point for watching the ships passing in and out of Poole Harbour.
Except during the busiest summer months, the beach is usually a haven of tranquillity. Situated on the south side of the mouth of Poole Harbour, at the very tip of the National Trust owned Studland Peninsula, it's harder to reach but well worth the effort. Either drive along the full length of the peninsula from the Swanage end, and you'll find Shell Bay is the last of Studland's beautiful beaches. Alternatively, catch the ferry from Sandbanks which runs regularly and carries vehicles, foot passengers and cyclists across the entrance to the harbour to the opposite shore.
The beach is great for family-friendly bathing, fishing and a variety of watersports including sailing and windsurfing. It also has toilets and plenty of parking. There is a designated naturist area between Shell Bay and Knoll Beach.
Dogs are welcome all year round, during the winter months there are no restrictions but between 1 April and 30 September they are required to be on a short lead (max 2m).
Shell Bay Seafood Restaurant lies opposite the beach - an outstanding, Michelin-listed eatery with fine views out over Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island.
Stayed in Sandbanks many times - this was the 1st time we caught the ferry on foot - had a lovely peaceful time walking the dog. Will definitely make a return trip next time down ?
October 2023
Beautiful and quiet
September 2023
Why did the system not accept my review until I upped my review from 2 star to 3 star. Funny that!
January 2020
Disappointed with the beach. It has deteriorated since we were last there, probably due to weather. There are now 2 streams crossing it which means that you have to do a detour to carry on walking on the beach. This in turn is causing additional damage and wear to dunes etc. All it needs is the National Trust to spend a little money to put some stepping stones in

Alum Chine is a wide sandy beach with a paddling pool and large adventure playground, making it the perfect beach to visit if you have young children in tow.
Meanwhile, the scenic sub-tropical gardens behind the beach with stunning views out to the Solent are a big draw for the older visitor. Due to the mild micro-climate along this stretch of the south coast, it's possible to grow many exotic species successfully.
The beach also boasts Blue Flag status, beach huts for hire and a large car park, as well as a regular bus service to and from Bournemouth Centre. The popular Land Train also links Alum Chine with other beaches along the long sandy stretch of Bournemouth seafront.
There's a popular family-friendly Italian restaurant, Vesuvio, and many ice cream vendors to keep you refreshed during the day.
A variety of watersports are available here including kayaking/canoeing, fishing, swimming, sailing and windsurfing.
Dogs are allowed on parts of the beach throughout the year although they are banned from certain areas - check local signage for details.
The kids playground was very attractive to our grandchildren who visited

Branksome Beach is a wide, golden stretch of sand popular among locals and visitors alike, in part due to its Blue Flag status which highlights high standards of cleanliness on the beach and in the bathing waters.
The beach benefits from a promenade behind and many facilities including beach huts, shop, bar and restaurant. There is also good disabled access and a safe swim zone.
Watersports include swimming and windsurfing and there is lifeguard cover in the summer months.
Dogs are not allowed on the main beach from the 1st May - 30th September, however they are allowed on the promenade on a short lead.
Up to its usual standard
October 2023
Excellent beach with a couple of miles walk possible along the promenade, soft sand and plenty of options for refreshments. Barbeques are also permitted.
June 2023
Four miles of beautiful sandy beaches fringe the Studland peninsula, stretching from the boundary of where the Jurassic Coast starts, with its views of the iconic chalk landmark Old Harry Rocks, northwards to Studland's tip at Shell Bay, with its ferry link to Poole and Bournemouth.
These idyllic beaches backed by windswept dunes and wild heathland offer a peaceful haven for simple family beach days, coastal walks or relaxing afternoons watching the waves gently lap the shores, and soaking up the sea views stretching from Old Harry to the Isle of Wight.
Gently shelving bathing waters and convenient parking make these beaches very popular with families. Activities include kayaking, snorkelling, paddleboarding, pedaloes, sailing and cycle hire.
Dogs welcome all year round but between 1 May and 30 September they are required to be on a short lead (less than 2m) on the beach.
